Old Phuket town like it names says is the original formation of Phuket. The now historical city once flourished during the tin mining boom about 100 years ago.

Phuket & Koh Samui

Muay Thai kick boxing, Thailands national sport. In Phuket, Patong Beach, Thailand, cars drive down every street with speakers blaring advertising each nights special event. “TONIGHT TONIGHT BIG FIGHT!” I paid a little extra to sit ring side so I could really feel the action. I was so close I was able to lean against the ring and poke my camera up and under the ropes to get a clear shot. The fights are a must see for anyone trying to experience the heart and soul of Thailand as you can see the passion in their eyes as they face off with their opponent. Fighters from around the world including Australia and Afghanistan come to challenge Thailand’s elite and I was even surprised to see the seriousness in boys as young ten who entered the ring and never held back.

Go see it for yourself when your in Thailand next.

Almost a year ago now I did a shoot for The Cipher Dance Academy to help promote the studio and its classes. The studio has continued to grow since then and there have been many more dance events and a few new teachers added to the roster. If your interested in learning an urban street dance style such as locking, popping, krump, breaking, house or hip hop then check out CDA some time soon!

Live a life

“Your crazy!” I explained to my friend Paul as he told me his idea to set his feet alight. Not something I recommended for everyone to try but daredevil Paul from Defy Films played it safe and came out without a scratch. Although he did melt his shoe laces.

Hidden in Perth city behind the gates of the Condor Carpark lies a treasure trove of wonderful, graffiti delights. Multiply stories above and below sea level covered in art work is a privilege for those who are lucky enough to hold a cap space here.

Perth City, Australia

Up early at 4:30am to line up for a good spot to sell goods at the Canningvale Markets. Old clothes, toys, books, jewellery and shoes, still in good condition looking for a new home. We didn’t make a fortune but it was a fun way to clean out the closet.

My good friend Paul at Defy Films used his ingenious mind to create a short animation using a still photo from one of my levitation escapades. Please enjoy 🙂

In the back alleys of Wolf  Lane in Perth city, Western Australia  I found Wally. Only 99 more to find.

Howard Lane hidden amongst a towering, forrest, of steel offices, reaching for the sky. Local artists The Yok and Stormy have brought the lane way to life and is a breath of fresh air for those going through the daily grind of the 9 to 5. This has got to be my favourite lane way in Perth.

Before they set off on their adventure around wild, Australia these happy little campers test run a night in their new home.

The second instalment to the All Styles battles at the Cipher Dance Academy where dancers from all aspects of the art come together.

Save the planet and levitate instead

What a glorious weekend it has been thus far. To have such a great family and friends I cannot thank you more. You leave me feeling like I will levitate once more…

As the sun sets I glide off towards a new adventure and who knows what awaits me this time.

Highly inspired by the inspirational Natsumi Hayashi, I have attempted my own form of levitation. The meditation process to attain such powers was time consuming but a rewarding experience.

Please visit the master of levitation

Oh please sir feed me some more

You’ve fed me once now I crave for galore

I’m helpless without you our bond is so tight

Don’t feed me soon and I’ll swoop down and bite

This nifty contraption combats against motor vehicles in a world where fuel prices match the age of the dinosaurs that bodies decayed in the natural process of anaerobic decomposition to become fossil fuels. The Zap electrical bicycle still requires you to pedal for the turbine engines to ignite but it makes the journey a whole lot easier.

As the DJ pumps up the volume a circle forms and those that dare enter not knowing if they will ever exit.

Medal Jam 12 in Perth, Western Australia had a record breaking crowd and number of competitors.  With special guest Hideboo from Sydney on the judging panel along with local legends Burnz 1 and Edit, Medal Jam allowed dancers as young as 8 through to 30 something build a strong community of local dancers.

May the force be with you…

My friend sells these super cute (supa kawaii) toys online and I was allowed special access to his storage warehouse to have a look at all the goodies. They all looked so lonely wrapped up in plastic stuck on the high shelves with no one to hug them. If you can help find them a home please help, but you will be put through a strict screening process to see if you’re suitable parents.

Just did some test shots with my sisters Sony Cyber-shot. It’s water proof in up to five meters of water which may come in handy on holidays.

Red spoon frozen yogurt 98% fat free means there’s always room for seconds. Pictured here is a passionfruit flavour, get closer to the screen and you can taste it. Each day they serve a different combo of flavours and my personal favourite is pistachio.

Four men set out on a journey with the challenge of completing a 100km walk within the constraints of twenty four hours. Raising money for The Motor Neurone Disease Association of Western Australia (MNDAWA), they trekked on foot averaging 4.7km an hour.

They had the support of friends and family along the way and not even the blistering sun, wild Kangaroos, bulging blisters, or deranged criminals on the run could stop these men on their journey.  From 7am Saturday morning until 4am the next day they successfully complete their task in record time.

Part of the walking team are members of  the Ups ‘n’ Downers Square Dance club who are all helping to raise money for the MNDAWA.

Two days before his wedding my friend Peter tells me he’s getting married and he need’s me to be there. I almost loose my job arguing with my boss to get time off with such short notice.

Weddings are always nice 😀

A strong, morning gust of wind, south of Perth city, carried this eighty kilo trampoline fifteen meters from above the hill to my front door.   I awoke to be shocked by the sight of this giant, bouncy piece of amusement sitting at the front door. Upon closer inspection I discovered a trail of destruction that the once loved trampoline had left.

But this is what i got…

Nicholsons Bar and Grill in Canning Vale recently upgraded its decor by adding these eye catching, electric, cherry blossom trees. A nice addition to delicious food inside. I recommend you try the chicken and avocado pizza.

Say what?! I found this just outside the convention center. Now who is MR MEN?

Today I helped my good friend Norman with his photo shoot by being his assistant for the morning. Its not always easy trying to get that perfect photo so I was there to help wherever needed. Click the link for his final images BRUIN MEDIA

Built in 1904 this, now abandoned, hospital for the mentally ill was once Western Australia’s largest. Most of the buildings that once took up almost 3 hectares have been demolished as the hospital was closed in 1983 with parts of it sold and subdivided. What buildings remain are heritage listed and the building decays as plans for the buildings possible future reopening remains slow moving.

Please enjoy the adventures of Norman and myself as we explore the hidden treasure that lies camouflaged in-between beautiful, three story houses that surround.

I ventured into the unknown with my Nikon D700 and 14 – 24mm and 24-70mm Nikkor lenses. I mostly used the 14-24mm to get a really wide shot of all the rooms.

Check out Normans blog BRUIN MEDIA for his images from the day

Day #1 the 365 day challenge – “GRAFFITI MADE ME RICH”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

New years eve celebrations brings me to Scarborough beach as I perform with the mighty ZENBURGER to celebrate the final moments of the year. After the show we all enjoy kebabs which become our first meal for 2012.

Just before midnight, as I was on my way home the other night, I noticed smoke below the hills at the local high school. I rushed inside to grab my camera and headed down to the scene. There had been a fire threatening the local high school but luckily fire fighters managed to contain the blaze before any damage to the buildings were done. When I saw the smoke I immediately thought what a great photo opportunity it would be, typical mode of thinking of a photographer. No one was harmed in the incident.

Just out hanging my washing mid morning when I noticed the piercing eyes of a snow white spider gaze upon me. It was so white that it was perfectly camouflaged sitting on the white washing line lines. But on the grounds red dirt my eight legged friend had no where to hide. Now I wonder if it’s poisonous?

I spent the afternoon at an indoor rock climbing gym. To conquer these walls one must possess great strength and agility, and like the saying goes what goes up must come down.

The raw nature of human beings leaves us unwilling to settle many arguments with a simple resolution. A difference of opinion, a difference in race or religion, or an unwillingness to share Earths natural resources. Like eggs we humans are so fragile and break easily leaving a mess that cannot be justified.

An afternoon at the jungle gym leads to a deluxe spin cycle on the spin-o-matic. A few too many spins later and half a bucket of pop corn before hand, and we all felt like milk in a blender.

Merry Christmas everyone, I hope Santa brought you something nice this year. All the  time sent preparing beautiful meals and the thought into buying presents all comes down to this one day where we spend time with our families and celebrate the special occasion. After lunch my family went for a drive to look at Christmas lights people had set up on their houses, one couple spent a month setting up all their lights and had previously raised over a thousand dollars for charity from donations received from the people that stop to look.

Christmas Morning

Fruit cheese cake for desert

The famous Christmas pudding

Make sure you have your flash ready as the lighting in clubs is quite low. Blur is common but can be cool to add movement to the party atmosphere.

It could be Christmas, or your about to plunder and pillage around the world on a boat full of Vikings, the hat says it all as each one  exudes character to suit every occasion.

For my birthday in August I got a Fisheye 2 lomography camera. I bought a roll of film with 30 shots and its taken me until now to use them all up. I tried to save it for more special moments because I felt like I didn’t want to waste the film, where with my digital camera’s I shoot with an carefree attitude. I accidentally  exposed half the film to sun light before I developed them because I pulled the film out of the camera incorrectly which meant I lost half the images i took, its been a while since I last used film and I shall try again soon.

As part of winning the “Food glorious food” competition at mynikonlife I was granted the opportunity to write a food review and take photo’s at the Red Cabbage in South Perth, for the latest My Nikon Life issue out now. I previously posted about my dinner but here are all the pics I submitted for the magazine.

Who wouldn’t want super powers, the only question is what side do you choose, good or evil?

I spotted an amazing artist in the city and stopped to get my portrait done. She did a great job and now I know what I’d look like if I were in a Manga comic!

The reality of what the human controlled, super robot, techno man is any way. A fork lift is much the same, without the deadly weapons of course, but a powerful peace of machinery we humans control and possibly use to help save the world from the threat of evil!

Nothing like a weekend road trip to break up the week

On December 8th 2011 BETTY SUGAR, along with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, hosted a fashion event to help raise much needed funds to help fight breast cancer and to create awareness in an entertaining, fashionable and positive way.

The weather had been bad all day but the sun decided to sneak out conquer the menacing rain as I drove home

It’s a beautiful piece of machinery

The energy from the crowd feeds my enthusiasm to continue playing music

The Foo Fighters and Tenacious D rock Perth! I took the day off work so I could line up early and to make it to the front of the crowd when the gates opened, but when the novice working the ticket scanners delayed our grand entrance we were disappointed to only get to second row. Smart manoeuvring and the pushing from the crowd behind me eventually led me to the very front. Normally DSLR camera’s with detachable lenses aren’t allowed into concerts but I was lucky to have my Nikon P7000, a small but powerful compact camera. All through the night, as part of the excited mosh pit, I enjoyed the show and took pictures to remember the awesome night that it was.

Tasty vegan food with vegan meat (mock meat).

Jasin Boland a stills photographer for many of Hollywoods great films such as The Matrix, Green Zone, Safe House Misson Impossible  and many more shared his time to talk with us about his tips and techniques being on set during capturing all the action. A truly humble and inspiring person to learn from. Thanks to Camera Electronic for putting his event together.

For fun, fame or fortune

The Yok – My fav graffiti artist and here is some of his work outside a barber shop in Victoria Park, Western Australia

It’s not cheap to be a professional ballroom dancer and at the young age of 14 and 17 these two future stars are raising money for the next year of events. They will each spend about $30,000 on flights, accommodation and costumes.

My generous friend Mr Aaron here has travelled all the way from China to Australia for work. He’s been working very hard travelling around the country but he finds time to hang out and share a pizza with friends.

We compare this dollar to every other currency in the would as a benchmark for monitory value. Most of us wish to have more than just one of these but does being rich really bring happiness? My sister found this quote;

“Only when the last tree has been cut down, Only when the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten”

North American Cree Indians prophecy

Businesses purchase stock from around the world because it actually turns out cheaper than locally produced products in some circumstances. In large quantities stock will travel months on the wide open seas in sea containers travelling around the world to reach its destination. The world is connected as we utilise each others resources to our advantages. Imagine all the different people that have stepped foot inside this container. This container came from the land of Japan to Australia, arigato gozaimasu.

Time is what we live by, time to eat, time to sleep, time to work, time to go home, time to party, time to study. Apparently there are never enough hours in the day. It’s such a precious thing that we take for granted until we no longer have any of it to spare. Some make the most of there’s while others let it waste away. However you decide to use it make sure you have time to at least appreciate it…

Its amazing what treasures you can find at the op-shop

Hippy dress up time!

Without the sun our planet would be a lifeless pile of dust. The sun is a powerfully force but in the small doses we receive it brings life to the world .Shot on the Nikon P7000

This is my new toy the Nikon P7000 that I won for the I AM NIKON competition, Its a great title compact with full manual operation and HD video. It’s light and compact and will go places my bigger D700 won’t go, will be great for concerts where your not allowed the big camera’s. I’ve got a lot of practice before I can fully master this baby!

As we participate in Bboy Katsu’s workshop we learn from him not only moves but he share’s his stories of living a life doing what you love and how the dance community looks after one another. Imagine travelling around the world to places where you’ve never meet anyone before and to realise your in some trouble not knowing who to turn to when a stranger approaches saying a friend of a friend called me to pick you up because we heard you needed help. That doesn’t happen very often but the bboy community looks after one another because its more than just a dance, its a life style, its a community of friends.

This is Perth’s 11th Medal Jam event which is a break dance battle also including a popping showcase, art and photography exhibition where I got to display some of my work. The event was held at The Cipher Dance Academy which celebrated its first year anniversary of giving Perth a dedicated Hip Hop venue. The event was a huge success and shows how Perths scene although small in comparisons to others has a strong community who all come out to support one another.

My sister!

Thanks to Shannon for modelling for me today, again I’m testing out my muslin backdrop. The material is thin and unless you have it hanging in front of a dark wall then lights will make it transparent. You get what you pay for but I think this will come in handy for portability and simple set ups for a home studio.

Please check the link to Shannon’s business Authentic Self, which offers services such as Reiki for people and Theta Healing. 🙂

The colour of your eyes, the tone of your skin, the way you smile, the way you laugh, the way you cry. How are you feeling today? No need to answer because I can see it in your face. You face tells the story of who you are. A person with an expressive face or someone who likes to smile will have wrinkles that tells us how much you do so. Take the time to notice subtle features as you can’t hide the truth in your face.

About the photo’s: I set up my Nikon D700 with a 50mm Nikkor on a tripod. I did these self portrait to test out a Muslin backdrop I purchased on Ebay. I much prefer paper backdrops but I wanted to test out the Muslin’s as they are half the price of the paper backdrops. The Muslin is good for portability but it can be tough to get a solid looking background and a background clear of wrinkles on the material. I used the afternoons natural sunlight coming through a window to cast shadows on one side of my face to give character and then edited in Adobe Lightroom to really bring out the blacks and detail.

Just received my 1st copy in the mail of my new subscription to National Geographic magazine. This is all I need to inspire my thoughts of travel and photography.

Tasmanian Tiger skeletons where found in the cave fallen from an opening near the roots of tree’s they made it all the way from tasmania to a sad fate. Once a animal falls they would most certainly not survive as there was no water or food in this cave for thousands of years.

My sister had her birthday today and her present was a set of Glowfly Glow Poi. Basically they are a ball on a string that you spin around. Oh and did I mention they glow in the dark COWABUNGA DUDES!

I was saving this nice bottle of Sake for a special moment after hearing some good news and catching up with good friends

Birthday lunch at South Perth

Luckily enough to get a Friday afternoon off work I attended a Nikon workshop on, Fashion blogging and natural light portraiture. I learnt a lot from the wise words from some of Australia’s top fashion photographers.

Red Cabbage fine dinning in South Perth, the award winning restaurant is definitely worth a visit to experience the modern British cuisine. As part of my prize for winning a food review assignment at My Nikon Life I was sent on assignment to review their food, check the next issue of the Nikon mag for my full review and pictures.

Sometimes grain can work to the advantage of your image so don’t always shy away from it as you try to get the perfect shot. Remember those old Alfred Hitchcock films. With the ever improving technology at hand I think we often forget that there is actually more importance to the content of the image compared to the quality of the image. Forget about having the best camera or lenses and think more about using your own eyes to see something special.

With the assistance of Natty “Nice” Pinkerton I did a photo shoot with the dance teachers at The Cipher Dance Academy. Check out the massive studio where you can learn from skilled and dedicated teachers in the styles of Breaking, Popping, Hip Hop, House, Dance Hall and more, take a class or just jam! 4/4 Whyalla st, Willeton, Western Australia

Just got my camera back after it spent the night at the camera shop as its sensor was due for a much needed cleaning. Strolling through Minnawarra Park you will find a nice array of colourful flowers and wildlife. With these shots I played around in Adobe Light Room to adjust colours to give a bit more pow.
